Preserving Durham’s Black Wall Street Legacy
Historically known as the North Carolina Mutual Building from 1965, this iconic tower was the tallest building in Durham for decades and housed the corporate offices of NC Mutual Life Insurance Company until 2017. Under new ownership, the building was renamed Legacy Tower.
After expressing naming concerns about the stripping of the Black Wall Street legacy, our principal and creative director, Tobias Rose, was invited to the conversation. Kompleks Creative renamed the building Tower at Mutual Plaza and named the coworking space Provident 1898. Part of the naming project included writing the story behind each name and producing logo designs and stationery designs.
